The other half of the desk

I have been gaming longer than I have been building

Started on a Terminator 2 — the 8-bit console with the grey light gun and a shoebox of cartridges. The PC years came after that, and these days it is mostly Valorant. Same habit throughout: read the screen fast, decide, commit.

me, most nights

How I got here

roughly in order

  1. Where it started

    Terminator 2, 8-bit

The grey console, two hard-edged controllers and a light gun you had to hold close to the TV. Mario, Contra and whatever else was on the cartridge that week. Everything since has been a bigger version of that.

  2. The CD-drive years

GTA, Prince of Persia, Call of Duty, Project IGI

The whole PC era on one hand-me-down machine. Prince of Persia I finished every part of, not just the famous one. Finished, not just installed.

  3. Between classes

    The flash game era

Browser tabs full of games that loaded in twenty seconds and ate an afternoon. Half of what I know about how an interface should feel came from there.

  4. Now

    Valorant, most nights

Five people, one plan, and about thirty seconds to change it. It sharpened how fast I read a screen, which turns out to be the same muscle a layout needs.

  5. Whenever the desk is not an option

    Mobile

Queue, commute, waiting room. Different screen, same habit.
